Transcript
Hey guys, let’s talk about the drug ranitidine also known as Xantac. This is an oral medication, as you can see here.
So the therapeutic class of ranitidine is an anti ulcer agent and the pharmacologic class or the chemical effect of the drug is an histamine H two antagonist. So the action of Reine is it inhibits the action of histamine and gastric protal cells, which decreases gastric acid secretion. So for this reason, we use this for the treatment of Dal ulcers, GERD heartburn, esophagitis N GI bleeds, some side effects that we do see with this drug are a granulosis cytosis aplastic anemia confusion in arrhythmias, a few nursing considerations for ranitidine assess your patient’s abdominal pain, monitor any blood in the stool, and also the CBC, particularly their hemoglobin. Be sure to teach the patient to report bloody stools to the provider. So guys, in the palliative care setting, if any of you work there or will work there, ranitidine is sometimes given subcutaneous subcutaneously for the IV solution. It is not actually approved this way, but it is safe and common practice in the care setting. That’s it for Anine or Zac now go out and be your best self today and as always happy nursing.
