Lesson Objective for Nursing Care Plan (NCP) for Ovarian Cancer

To equip nursing professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills for effectively managing patients with ovarian cancer. This plan focuses on understanding the disease’s pathophysiology, recognizing its symptoms, and implementing comprehensive nursing interventions for symptom management, complication prevention, and emotional support.

Pathophysiology for Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries, which are the female reproductive organs responsible for producing eggs and the hormones estrogen and progesterone. There are several types of ovarian cancer, but the most common is epithelial ovarian cancer, which arises from the cells on the surface of the ovary. Ovarian cancer is often undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and abdomen, making it more challenging to treat.

Etiology for Ovarian Cancer

Risk factors for ovarian cancer include:

  • Age:
    • Most common in women over 50.
  • Family History of ovarian or breast cancer.
  • Genetic Mutations:
    • Such as BRCA1 and BRCA2.
  • Reproductive History:
    • Early menstruation or late menopause increases risk.
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy

Desired Outcomes for Ovarian Cancer

  • Effective management of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
  • Prevention or management of complications such as bowel obstruction and ascites.
  • Maintenance of nutritional status and body weight.
  • Patient and family understanding of the disease process, treatment options, and lifestyle adaptations.

Nursing Care Plan (NCP) for Ovarian Cancer

Subjective Data:

  1. Abdominal bloating or swelling.
  2. Pelvic pain or discomfort.
  3. Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation.
  4. Feeling full quickly when eating or decreased appetite.

Objective Data:

  1. Abnormal findings on pelvic examination.
  2. Elevated CA-125 level in blood tests, although not specific to ovarian cancer.
  3. Imaging studies (e.g., ultrasound, CT scan) indicating ovarian masses.
  4. Biopsy confirming the presence of cancer cells.

Nursing Assessment for Ovarian Cancer

  • Abdominal and Pelvic Assessment:
    • Monitor for distention, pain, and any palpable masses.
  • Nutritional Status Assessment:
    • Monitor for signs of weight loss, malnutrition, or difficulty eating.
  • Fluid Status Assessment:
    • Assess for signs of ascites and fluid imbalances.
  • Psychosocial Assessment:
    • Evaluate emotional and psychological responses to the diagnosis and treatment.

Nursing Diagnosis for Ovarian Cancer

  • Acute Pain related to tumor growth or metastasis.
  • Imbalanced Nutrition:
    • Less Than Body Requirements related to decreased appetite and cancer metabolism.
  • Excess Fluid Volume related to ascites and tumor-related fluid production.
  • Anxiety related to cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Nursing Interventions and Rationales for Ovarian Cancer

Pain Management: Administer prescribed analgesics and implement non-pharmacological pain relief methods.

  • Rationale: Effective pain control enhances patient comfort and quality of life.

Nutritional Support: Collaborate with a dietitian to address nutritional needs and manage symptoms impacting food intake.

  • Rationale: Adequate nutrition supports overall health and treatment tolerance.

Anxiety Reduction: Provide emotional support and counseling referrals as necessary.

  • Rationale: Psychological support helps patients cope with the stress and uncertainty of cancer.

Fluid Management: Monitor fluid balance and implement interventions to manage ascites.

  • Rationale: Managing fluid volume prevents complications and improves comfort.

Patient Education: Educate the patient and family about ovarian cancer, treatment options, and self-care practices.

  • Rationale: Enhances understanding and involvement in the care process, leading to better outcomes.

Nursing Evaluation for Ovarian Cancer

  • Pain Management Effectiveness:
    • Routinely evaluate pain levels and the effectiveness of pain management strategies.
  • Nutritional Status:
    • Monitor dietary intake, weight stability, and signs of nutritional adequacy.
  • Fluid Balance:
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of fluid management strategies.
  • Patient and Family Understanding and Coping: Assess their comprehension of the condition, treatment plan, and coping strategies.
