Transcript
Okay, let’s take a look at, Lapide also known as Imodium. This is an oral medication, as you can see here.
So the therapeutic class or how the drug works in the body for Lapide is an anti real, the pharmacologic class or the chemical effect of the drug is a Parone derivative. So Lapide works by inhibiting peristalsis. It reduces the volume of feces while increasing the bulk and viscosity. So makes sense. We use Lapide for the tree treatment of acute diarrhea and also to decrease drainage, post ileostomy. A few of the side effects that we see with Lapide are things like flatulence, headache, nausea, and dizziness. Okay. Let’s take a look at a few nursing considerations for Lapide assess the bowel function and also their fluid and electrolyte status. Besides the side effects that were already mentioned, Lapide may lead to constipation with overuse, be sure guys, to teach the patient that they must use this drug exactly as directed. So in addition to the pharmacologic class already mentioned Lapide is actually an opioid receptor agonist, however, Lapide can’t cross the blood brain barrier. So it doesn’t have an effect on the central nervous system. However, there have been K where patients try to abuse Lapide for an opioid like high. So this is obviously super dangerous because abuse can lead to severe constipation, which can then lead to intestinal obstruction, which then requires surgery. That’s it for Lapide or Imodium now go out and be your best self today. And as always happy nursing.
