Definition/Etiology:

• Viral infection affecting respiratory system.
• Most at risk:
  • Older adults
  • Weakened immune systems
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Obese

Pathophysiology:

Noticing: Assessment & Recognizing Cues:

• S/S
  • Fever
  • Aching muscles
  • Chills and sweats
  • Cough (dry, persistent)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue 
  • Sore throat
  • Vomit/diarrhea= child > adult

Interpreting: Analyzing & Planning:

• Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Responding: Patient Interventions & Taking Action:

• Fluids
• Rest
• Ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen
• Medications- antivirals may be more effective if given early 
  • Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)
  • Zanamivir (Relenza)
  • Peramivir (Rapivab)
  • Baloxavir (Xofluza)
• Prevention
  • Hand washing
  • Annual flu shot
