GI Infections (C. difficile)
Definition/Etiology:
- Infection in the gut
- Gastroenteritis
- Clostridioides difficile (C. diff)
Pathophysiology:
- Gastroenteritis
- could be viral or bacterial. (enterotoxins could be released by bacteria.) May be spread by fecal-oral route
- Diff
Noticing: Assessment & Recognizing Cues:
- N/V/D 1-3 x/day
- Abdominal cramping
- Increased frequency N/V/D
- Distention
- Fever
- Tachycardia
- Increased WBCs
- Weight loss/ decreased appetite
Interpreting: Analyzing & Planning:
- CBC
- BMP (watch electrolyte imbalance caused by V & D)
- Stool sample (C. Diff)
Responding: Patient Interventions & Taking Action:
- Gastroenteritis
- IVF
- Anti-emetics
- May need electrolyte replacements
- C-Diff
- Abx
- Anti-diarrheal
- Toxic Megacolon- (Surgery, fecal transplant)
Reflecting: Evaluating Patient Outcomes:
- N/V/D improved
- Increased appetite/hydration status
- Yogurt/probiotic
