Gastrointestinal Trauma
Definition/Etiology:
- GI trauma – results from blunt/penetrating injury to the abdominal cavity
- Common causes = MVA, Stab wounds, blunt injury including falls, crushing injuries
Pathophysiology:
Insult can cause injury to the abdominal organs including bleeding, bruising, rupture and decreased blood flow leading to necrosis
Clinical Presentation:
- Tenderness upon palpation
- Guarding
- Rigidity
- Bloating
- Bruising
- Seatbelt sign
- Hypotension
Collaborative Management:
- NPO
- Imaging
- Labs
- FAST exam
- UA for hematuria
Evaluation | Patient Monitoring | Education:
- Hemodynamic monitoring (watch for hypovolemic shock)
- Pain Management
- Monitor for additional symptoms
