Gastrointestinal Trauma

 

Definition/Etiology:

  • GI trauma – results from blunt/penetrating injury to the abdominal cavity
  • Common causes = MVA, Stab wounds, blunt injury including falls, crushing injuries

 

Pathophysiology:

Insult can cause injury to the abdominal organs including bleeding, bruising, rupture and decreased blood flow leading to necrosis

 

Clinical Presentation:

  • Tenderness upon palpation
  • Guarding
  • Rigidity
  • Bloating
  • Bruising
  • Seatbelt sign 
  • Hypotension

 

Collaborative Management:

  • NPO
  • Imaging 
  • Labs
  • FAST exam
  • UA for hematuria

 

Evaluation | Patient Monitoring | Education:

  • Hemodynamic monitoring (watch for hypovolemic shock)
  • Pain Management
  • Monitor for additional symptoms
