Nurse’s role:

  • Advocate for patient
  • Echo facility policy
    • Anes/surgeon compliance
      • 2 patients is not“available” staff
  • Documentation of personnel and procedures performed
  • Verification credentials
    • Should be available from within the room
    • Know how to contact specialties for consult

 

Pitfalls:

  • Visiting surgeons
  • Poor communication
  • “busy”/emergent
  • Anesthesia splitting up
  • “Hip to hip”
  • Company reps
    • No touch!

 

Examples:

  • Anes resident completing case in OR while supervising staff completes C-section on L&D (is staff“available”? facility/state policy, was second case emergent, etc)
