10.03 Acute Respiratory Failure for CCRN Review
Outline
Overview
- Type I
- Hypocapnic
- Decreased oxygen
- Normal or low CO2
- Imbalance between perfusion and ventilation
- Causes → initially low to normal CO2
- Pulmonary Edema
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Asthma
- Aspiration pneumonia
- ARDS
- Type II
- Hypercapnic
- Decreased oxygen
- HIGH CO2 Level
- Imbalance of respiratory performance
- Causes:
- Drug overdose
- Guillean bureau
- COPD
- Spinal cord injury
- CVA
- V/Q Mismatch
- Ventilation perfusion Imbalance
- Causes
- COPD
- Asthma
- Atelectasis
- Emphysema
- Hypoventilation
- Pulmonary edema
- Pulmonary embolism
- ABG improves with oxygen
- Shunt
- Blood has gone from right ventricle to pulmonary system and to the left ventricle, but NEVER meets the capillary beds for an oxygen exchange
- Causes
- ARDS
- Need PEEP to improve oxygenation
