Room Preparation (Equipment, Supplies, Personnel)

Guidelines:

  • Necessary equipment only
  • Stocked and counted per policy
  • Fed, rested staff
  • Verify sterility indicators (insert chart)
  • Room temp/humid tracking
  • Anesthesia test
  • Post-op availability
    • Ride, bed, pacu, etc
  • Reps needed?
  • Imaging present
  • Pullcard

Considerations:

  • Room selection
    • Distance to help
    • Room function
  • Test air return
  • Have equipment for “possible”
    • All lap is possible open
  • Path for equipment
    • C arm
    • Bed position! (base)

Nurse’s role:

  • Final room inspection
  • Coordination with teams
    • Radiology
    • Lab
  • Verification of sterility
  • Presence of needed supplies

Pitfalls:

  • “Possible but not possible”
  • Bed position
  • Post-op dispo
  • 1 of 1 sets

Examples:

  • Known 1 of 1 set needed for case (open on table and verified before rolling)
  • Need C-arm with no room or path for adequate imaging (inform Charge/manager/surgeon, likely need new room)

Linchpins (Key Points):

  • Each team looks to the circulating RN for the ownership of the OR space
